Fall Color Trends

Each season there are colors that keep popping up throughout collections. This fall you need to be on the lookout for pieces in tan, red, olive, purple, light blue and a variety of metallics. Even though high end designers used these colors in their collections, don't worry- you do not need to pay designer prices to look perfect this fall.

Tan

This color was seen on the runways of Armani Privé, Gucci, Chloé, Michael Kors and Dries van Noten. A classic trench is an easy way to incorporate this color into your wardrobe. Plus, a trench is an essential, in my opinion.

Red

Red is going to be so much fun to wear this fall, especially since red lips are on trend as well. Dolce & Gabbana, Jill Staurt, Marc by Marc Jacobs and others let this hue brighten up their shows.

Olive

Military inspired looks and colors were popular last fall, as well as this spring and summer. The trend continues and Burberry Prorsum did it to perfection. Pringle of Scotland and Fendi also showed olive in their collections.

Purple

Purple is one of my favorite colors, as it is the color of my alma mater, so I am biased. But, purple is pretty much universally flattering and add a richness to looks. This gem tone graced the runways of Preen, Tadashi Shoji, Burberry Prorsum, Oscar de la Renta and more.

Light Blue

Pastel colors are usually reserved for spring, so seeing this hue in the fall is refreshing. Gray blue and pale blue in heavy fabrics will keep you at the top of the fashion heap. Chanel, Christian Dior and Philip Lim 3.1 all used light blue this fall.

Bibs Aren't for Babies: The Bib Necklace

Statement necklaces, and more specifically bib necklaces, are a must have accessory. The big, look-at-me necklace can elevate a tank, t-shirt or simple dress to a chic ensemble.

Haute Hippie The Bib Necklace, $142.50 from Shop Bop

Haute Hippie The Bib Necklace, $142.50 from Shop Bop

The bib necklace quite literally resembles a bib in some forms. Other bib necklaces are just large with a looser interpretation. Many bib necklaces are on a ribbon, which requires you to tie them instead of clasp them. So, even from the back, you have a cute bow just below your hairline. This makes the bib necklace a perfect accessory to wear you hair up with.

Goldtone Beaded Bib Necklace, $39.99 from Target

With a bib necklace, you don't need to worry about many other accessories. Simple earrings are best, otherwise big chandeliers will just compete with the necklace.

Ibiza Hand Embellished Necklace, $43.81 from Asos

Ibiza Hand Embellished Necklace, $43.81 from Asos

Your clothing should have simple lines and a solid color. Extra embellishments on your clothes and patterns will be too overwhelming. But, don't be afraid to pair jacket or shrug with the look- the necklace will look great peeking out from underneath. You can still have fun with your shoes since they are on the opposite pole of your body.

A great way to wear a bib necklace is with a black tank, dark wash skinny jeans and booties. Also, try a dress, belt and sandals with your necklace.

Fall Must Have Accessory: The Brooch

Brooches are not just for your grandmother anymore. The Armani Privé Fall 2010 Couture Collection showed us that brooches don't have to be dowdy.

Armani Prive 2010 Fall Couture

Armani Privé was full of neutrals and large brooches on waistlines, necks and lapels. You can use the collection as inspiration for wearing brooches yourself. Also, incorporating a brooch into your current wardrobe is a way to instantly update pieces for the fall.

Find a brooch or pin that fits your personal style and give this trend a go. A simple way to wear a brooch is on a black blazer lapel or at the waist of a draped dress. A brooch will instantly add interest to any outfit and can be worn day or night.

Maybe going through grandma's old jewelry box will yield a few treasures.

My Favorite Lines Series: Elie Tahari

Elie Tahari had an interesting life before becoming one of my favorite designers. I love his clothing because it has a simplicity about it, but still has complex detailing and impeccable tailoring. Wearing one of his pieces will make you feel feminine, but still powerful.

Elie was born in Jerusalem, moved to Iran, returned to Israel, and then was placed in an orphanage and later lived at an Israeli Air Force Base. At the age of 19, Elie moved to the US.

In New York, Elie worked as an electrician in the garment district; he often stayed at the local YMCA and sometimes had nowhere to stay. Luckily, Elie eventually landed a job at women's boutique selling clothing. Soon after, he began designing women's clothing inspired by the club scene in the 70's. Elie was one of the first designers to open a boutique on Madison Ave. It wasn't until the 1980's that Elie began focusing on tailoring and suits.

In 1997 Elie and Andrew Rosen founded the Theory line. However, in 2003, Elie sold his share of the company and is no longer involved with the company. Elie's soon-to-be-ex-wife helped him develop the Elie Tahari Collection in the late 1990's. She also helped the brand expand and become a $500 million dollar company.

In 2006 the brand expanded to include a full menswear line, accessories and shoes. With these lines, and his womenswear line, the Tahari brand is working on expanding into the Asian markets.

Elie once said, "clothing should be quieter than the woman so that her true beauty can shine through." That is a statement that we should keep in mind when shopping for beautiful clothing.

Shimmer & Shine in Sequins

The Chanel Fall/Winter 2010 couture show featured sequined looks. This means the trend is here for the fall!

Chanel Fall 2010 Couture Show

You don't have to look like a disco ball when wearing sequins. Which is good news, because I don't know anyone that would look good as a disco ball.

To avoid sequin overload, there are few things to keep in mind when looking for your perfect sequined outfit.

Alice and Olivia Ombre Sequin Dress, $596 from Chick Downtown

Alice + Olivia Ombre Sequin Dress, $596 from Chick Downtown

The obvious is not to wear a dress, top, pants or skirt totally covered in sequins. Look for sequin accents and details to get the sparkley affect you want. You can add more shimmer to you outfit with shoes, jewelry and headbands.

Moschino Cheap Chic Sequin Wristlet, $249 from Gilt

Moschino Cheap & Chic Sequin Wristlet, $249 from Gilt

If you want more sequins that just a little accent here or there, keep your eye out for sequins that create an ombré effect. Since the sequins will gradually get less dense, you won't look too shiny. Also, an entire piece that is sequined in pale sequins (nude, champagne, white) is more subdued. Going the opposite with very dark colors makes the super shininess recede and doesn't allow it to become overpowering.

Sue Wong Black Dress, $99 from Rue Lala

There are some great brightly colored sequined items out there, too. If you are bold and want to go for hot pink sequins, keep minimal. For example, a mini skirt or tank top in bright sequins will give you a high impact punch without going overboard. Just remember to keep the rest of your outfit simple, like a black cami or slim black pants.

Rachel Roy Neon Skirt, $238.50 from Shop Bop

Of course, well made clothing always goes far in the overall look. Tailoring, a good fit and overall silhouette can make the difference. Smaller sequins also look more posh than large sequins that are not sewn on well.

Katia Lombardo Platform, $206.25 from My Wardrobe

Sequins are fun trend that does not have to look trashy, cheesy or for holiday clothing only. Just mindful when you are shopping and you will shine all night long!

Limited edition eyeshadows and blushes only come in the regular plastic containers ("pots") and not in the pro-palette form. Fortunately, I have successfully depotted many eyeshadows, several contour powders, and even a blush or two. If these are as good as they sound, I'll be doing a little depotting come September. Just follow the simple directions from Temptalia and you'll be in good shape. Note: Don't let your flat iron get too hot and don't do this with mineralized products.

Leave it to Leaves

Leaves remind me of spring and of fall. In the spring, bright green leaves signal the change of season and warmer weather to come. Yet, in the fall, the colorful leaves signaling the crisp weather and winter to come.

Kenneth Jay Lane Leaf Bracelet, $47 from Blue Fly

The organic shape of leaves is beautiful; the curves, the veins and how they float and flutter to the ground. Nature inspires fashion constantly and how designers interpret nature varies from person to person.

Kenneth Jay Lane, one of my favorite jewelry designers, interprets nature literally with his leaf collection.

Like Kenneth Jay Lane, other designers created literal leaf pieces. But, some have just taken the inspiration of the leaf and nature and created organically shaped jewelry. Either way you go, you cannot go wrong. If you can't decide, pick a variety of pieces to add to your collection. This jewelry may be on trend for this fall, but it has a timeless feel since the cycle of seasons is never ending.
