It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World

Mad Men's 1960's inspired wardrobe is making current day fashionistas crazy for their looks.

Women in the early 60's imitated First Lady Jackie Kenney's look. Suits in pastel colors, pillbox hats, boxy jackets, shift dresses, capri pants and full skirted dresses were in style.

Mary Quant's mini skirt introduction in the mid-sixties changed fashion from that time forward. Micro-mini skirts and A-line skirts and dresses were trendy, as was the "mod" futuristic look. Slim jeans and pants were often worn, but bell-bottoms were an alternative. Hats were still popular, but instead of the pillbox hat, large, colorful hats were seen. Women cut their hair short, wore false eyelashes and pale lipstick. Pucci and Pucci-esque patterns and fabric were seen all over stores.

In the late 60's the hippie look was favored. Bell-bottoms became the pants of choice, often frayed on the bottom. Other popular items included tie dye tops, fringed vests, headbands, bangle bracelets, sandals and flowing dresses and loose tops.

Janie Bryant, the costume designer for Mad Men, is creating a clothing line to be sold by QVC beginning September 29, 2010 (Mod by Janie Bryant, $18-138). She is also working with Maidenform to create a line of intimate apparel. But, Bryant's lines aren't the only places you can find your favorite early 60's Mad Men styles.
