Make Your Mark

Nameplate necklaces are over. Multi-finger rings with your name on them are out. Even initial necklaces seem tired.

Fall Must Have Accessory: The Brooch

Brooches are not just for your grandmother anymore. The Armani Privé Fall 2010 Couture Collection showed us that brooches don't have to be dowdy.

Armani Privé was full of neutrals and large brooches on waistlines, necks and lapels. You can use the collection as inspiration for wearing brooches yourself. Also, incorporating a brooch into your current wardrobe is a way to instantly update pieces for the fall.

Find a brooch or pin that fits your personal style and give this trend a go. A simple way to wear a brooch is on a black blazer lapel or at the waist of a draped dress. A brooch will instantly add interest to any outfit and can be worn day or night.

Maybe going through grandma's old jewelry box will yield a few treasures.

Leave it to Leaves

Leaves remind me of spring and of fall. In the spring, bright green leaves signal the change of season and warmer weather to come. Yet, in the fall, the colorful leaves signaling the crisp weather and winter to come.

Kenneth Jay Lane Leaf Bracelet, $47 from Blue Fly

The organic shape of leaves is beautiful; the curves, the veins and how they float and flutter to the ground. Nature inspires fashion constantly and how designers interpret nature varies from person to person.

Kenneth Jay Lane, one of my favorite jewelry designers, interprets nature literally with his leaf collection.

Like Kenneth Jay Lane, other designers created literal leaf pieces. But, some have just taken the inspiration of the leaf and nature and created organically shaped jewelry. Either way you go, you cannot go wrong. If you can't decide, pick a variety of pieces to add to your collection. This jewelry may be on trend for this fall, but it has a timeless feel since the cycle of seasons is never ending.

My Favorite Lines Series: CC Skye

This series began to highlight some of my favorite designers and lines, so I figure that jewelry designer and lines count too! It's my blog and I get to make the rules around here :)

CC Skye Pave Iron Cross Bracelet from Billion Dollar Babes

CC Skye Pave Iron Cross Bracelet, $74 from Billion Dollar Babes

CC Skye is described as a glam goth, which is a good assessment of the line. Think spikes, but in polished gold with pearls. Or maybe a safety pin necklace with rhinestones appeals to the punk in you.

CC Skye Zipper Pull Necklace from Beyond the Rack

CC Skye Zipper Pull Necklace, $39 from Beyond the Rack

CC Skye, named after the designer, is consistently on the top of "best" lists. It is easy to see why with the playful, yet polished pieces in the collection. You can easily wear any of CC Skye's pieces during the day or at night to give your look an edge.

Though CC is based in Los Angles, she started making jewelry in Nepal while on a half-year trip abroad. She not only crafted jewelry, but made her own clothing too. Now, the CC Skye brand includes bags, as well as jewelry. Maybe we'll see a clothing line in the future.

Geode Jewelry

If you are looking for an interesting piece of jewelry, go with a natural look. Nature's geodes and turquoise are beautiful and unique. I have a blueish gray geode wire wrapped ring from Revolver, a local upscale consignment boutique. Every single time I wear it, I get tons of compliments and people asking where they can find it.

However, if you aren't in the Raleigh area, you can still find natural jewelry.

Dara Ettinger graduated from Parsons School of Design. Upon graduating, she worked for a multitude of clothing companies, including Polo Ralph Lauren, Cynthia Steffe and Anthropolgie. She moved to Los Angeles from New York to work on her jewelry line, which is lucky for us since her jewelry is fabulous! Her unique creations can be worn casually during the day, or can be easily worn at night.

Devon Leigh is another jewelry designer that utilizes natural materials. Devon studied film at Loyola Marymount University, but found her hobby of making jewelry taking over her career aspirations. The Los Angeles native will make one-of-a-kind pieces that include diamonds and other precious gems for a sure to be show stopping piece.

Heather Moore began her Cleveland, Ohio based company in 1994. She uses 100% recycled materials; each piece is unique due to natural materials. Heather will also customize jewelry for a special gift that will last forever. The personalization process is done by hand using vintage tools of the trade.

Next time you are looking for an unexpected, yet beautiful, strong, yet feminine accessory, look for jewelry made from natural materials that haven't been altered (too much!) from their original state. These natural jewelry pieces can be worn day or night, in casual settings or more formal. Just know that you will be answer the same question all night: "Where did you get that?"

Fair Trade Meets Fashion: Beleza

You probably know about fair trade coffee. I never thought about other products though; Beleza has. Beleza is a fair trade jewelry and accessory boutique with a wide assortment of beautiful baubles.

Many of Beleza's products come from Brazil, but you can also find items from Madagascar and Uganda. As a fair trade boutique, the sale of the items supports the artisans and gives them a fair wage to live off of and encourages sustainability. Plus, the prices are affordable because Beleza conducts business directly with the artisan, cutting out the middlemen.

The small store is packed with unique earrings, rings, necklaces, bracelets, small purses, hair accessories, textiles such as blankets and pashimas, and artwork. As I looked at each artisan's section in the store, I found necklace after ring after bracelet that I wanted.

The Zulugrass line is produced by Kenyan women that learned the craft during an especially hard drought. The necklaces are made from Czech crystal beads that shine in a multitude of colors. You can layer multicolored strands, stay monochromatic or even double over the long strands. The bright colors will brighten up any outfit this summer.

You probably recycle paper, but you will be very impressed by what Ugandans in refugee camps have created with recycled paper. They have created interesting, colorful unique jewelry and small handbags all made from recycled paper beads. What is even more impressive is the time that it must take to make each bead and then each piece of jewelry, as no dye or coloring is used. The colors come from the paper and the artisans must match up the colors as they naturally occur.

Beleza Ugandan Paper Beads

Looking for a statement piece of jewelry? The semi-precious stone jewelry made in Brazil will give you just that. Creative necklaces and chunky cuffs will give you the tribal look that is so popular this spring. Besides having beautiful stones, you will have superior metal work. Wear one this necklace, below, and you will be sure to get second looks.

The horn and gold grass bracelets are my favorites. The horn cuffs are so interesting and will really make you think about all the uses an animal serves to the people of Madagascar where this jewelry is made. The strands of gold grass in the bangles will momentarily confuse you. Can grass really make these bangles and earrings? Yes, and they are lightweight and amazing.

Beleza Madagascar Horn Cuffs

Crocheted steel. Sounds interesting? Well, it is and it is also beautiful. The artisans crochet stainless steel and suture wire into designs and use the same wire to make beaded jewelry. This is jewelry from truly found objects in the wire used. This jewelry is so creative and imaginative that you must own a piece.

Beleza is great for a unique gift that will be remembered for years to come, and, of course, spicing up your own jewelry collection with pieces that are sure to get comments and compliments. Plus, you can feel good about spending your money at a fair trade boutique: fashion and helping all at once!
