You don't have to look like a disco ball when wearing sequins. Which is good news, because I don't know anyone that would look good as a disco ball.3.1 Phillip Lim Mini Dress, $324 from The OutNet
To avoid sequin overload, there are few things to keep in mind when looking for your perfect sequined outfit.Alice + Olivia Ombre Sequin Dress, $596 from Chick Downtown
The obvious is not to wear a dress, top, pants or skirt totally covered in sequins. Look for sequin accents and details to get the sparkley affect you want. You can add more shimmer to you outfit with shoes, jewelry and headbands.Moschino Cheap & Chic Sequin Wristlet, $249 from Gilt
If you want more sequins that just a little accent here or there, keep your eye out for sequins that create an ombré effect. Since the sequins will gradually get less dense, you won't look too shiny. Also, an entire piece that is sequined in pale sequins (nude, champagne, white) is more subdued. Going the opposite with very dark colors makes the super shininess recede and doesn't allow it to become overpowering.Sue Wong Black Dress, $99 from Rue Lala
There are some great brightly colored sequined items out there, too. If you are bold and want to go for hot pink sequins, keep minimal. For example, a mini skirt or tank top in bright sequins will give you a high impact punch without going overboard. Just remember to keep the rest of your outfit simple, like a black cami or slim black pants.Rachel Roy Neon Skirt, $238.50 from Shop Bop
Of course, well made clothing always goes far in the overall look. Tailoring, a good fit and overall silhouette can make the difference. Smaller sequins also look more posh than large sequins that are not sewn on well.Katia Lombardo Platform, $206.25 from My Wardrobe
Sequins are fun trend that does not have to look trashy, cheesy or for holiday clothing only. Just mindful when you are shopping and you will shine all night long!Tibi Persephone Sequined Top, $201 from The OutNet
